Actor Hosei Komatsu died of an infection Friday morning in a Tokyo hospital, his family said Saturday. He was 76.

Komatsu, whose real name was Toyoshige Komatsu, made his debut as a movie actor in 1959 and mainly played villains’ parts. He acted in films directed by Nagisa Oshima, including “Koshikei” (“Death by Hanging”) and “Muri shinju: Nihon no natsu” (“Japanese Summer: Double Suicide.”)

His other works included “Shinju Ten no Amishima” (“Double Suicide”) and “Chikuzan Hitori Tabi” (“The Life of Chikuzan.”)

A native of Nagano Prefecture, Komatsu also played numerous television drama roles, as well as appearing in variety shows and dubbing western films into Japanese.

A date for a memorial service and a funeral have yet to be decided.
