Domestic shipments of mobile phone handsets, including personal handy-phone equipment, rose 23.5 percent in May from a year earlier to 4,002,000 units, logging a seventh straight monthly gain, an industry association said Thursday.

May was the third straight month in which such shipments rose above 4 million units, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association said.

Shipments of mobile phones, excluding PHS handsets, increased 23.7 percent to 3,891,000 units, extending their rising streak to eight months, the association said.

Shipments of PHS handsets alone rose 18.6 percent to 111,000 units, for the third consecutive monthly gain, reflecting strong demand for PHS terminals designed for data transmission, the association said.
