Sanyo Electric Co. shareholders approved the resignation of former Philippine President Corazon Aquino as an outside board member at a general shareholders' meeting Friday.

Sanyo said that after the meeting, the company's board members approved Aquino's appointment as a corporate senior adviser to the consumer electronics company.

It said Aquino has made various contributions to the company since joining the board in June 1999, such as giving advice from a woman's perspective on household electronic appliances.

"In the process of product development, I made proposals on concepts that are friendly toward women, and I am thankful they were accepted," Aquino told the shareholders' meeting in Japanese. "I will do my utmost as an adviser from now on."

A total of 1,380 people attended the meeting.
