A former police officer was sentenced Tuesday to three years and 10 months in prison for causing a man's death due to speeding.

Shinya Ichikawa, 20, was doing about 110 kph in a 40 kph zone in Daito, Shizuoka Prefecture, on Feb. 20 when he failed to negotiate a left turn and struck an oncoming car driven by Tsugio Aono, 62, who was killed.

Ichikawa, who resigned from the force after the accident, was tried in the Hamamatsu branch of the Shizuoka District Court on a charge of dangerous driving resulting in death, a criminal count created under the Penal Code in December 2001.

Prosecutors had demanded a five-year prison term.
