An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6 hit part of Hokkaido early Sunday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

There are no reports of damage or casualties from the 3:41 a.m. quake that originated about 50 km under the surface of the sea off the southeast coast of the Nemuro Peninsula.

The quake registered a 4 on the Japanese intensity scale of 7 in the town of Betsukai, and a 3 in Nemuro. and Kushiro, all in Hokkaido.
