Police determined Wednesday that 6.5 million yen in cash is missing from two large safes at a financial futures dealer in Tokyo's Minato Ward where two men died in a suspected arson-murder Monday.

Following a search Wednesday, police said that cash from two Ace International Inc. safes is missing. A dial safe in an accounting room had contained 5.5 million yen, and a keypad safe in the chairman's office had held 1 million yen.

A company employee who checked the safes between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday confirmed that the cash had been in the safes at that time.

The charred bodies of 41-year-old Yasufumi Yamamoto managing director at Ace International, and 49-year-old Teruo Kondo, the firm's administration manager, were found in the office.

The bodies were found after a fire was doused in the company's offices, located on the fourth floor of the 11-story Shin Toranomon Building in Tokyo's Akasaka district, at 7:40 a.m. Monday.

Police have been questioning company employees on whether the two men had fallen out over an in-house investigation into the firm's accounting practices, they said.

They said earlier that Yamamoto was in trouble over his handling of the firm's financial records and that Kondo was in charge of the probe concerning him.

Police learned earlier that Yamamoto and Kondo were at the company Sunday to discuss accounting problems, as an audit was scheduled for Monday.

Kondo was stabbed from behind, and Yamamoto had sustained two stab wounds to his abdomen, police said earlier, noting that the premises had apparently been torched.
