A 42-year-old man accused of falsely reporting in January that he saw suspicious people surfacing from the sea and landing on Enoshima, Kanagawa Prefecture, has agreed to pay 1.3 million yen in damages to the government, it was announced Friday.

Shinichi Torii, described as an unemployed resident of Isehara, Kanagawa Prefecture, will pay the damages to the Yokohama-based Third Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, which deployed patrol boats and aircraft in response to his prank call, officials said.
