Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited the University of Warsaw and a rehabilitation center for the physically disabled here on Friday, the last full day of their four-day visit to Poland.

The Imperial Couple chatted with professors and students at the university's Center of Oriental Studies and attended a Japanese speech contest. The center is known for its Japanese studies programs.

The Emperor and Empress were also shown a collection of historical documents on Japan's diplomatic ties with Poland.

Earlier in the day, they visited a Warsaw rehabilitation center, where they watched wheelchair-bound athletes take part in fencing and basketball.

As the couple was leaving they were given a picture that took residents of the center about a month to complete, according to Polish officials.

The Imperial Couple wound up their official functions in Poland at a reception at the Japanese ambassador's residence Friday evening. The event was in honor of the Polish government leaders who welcomed them.

At the reception, the Imperial Couple met with three elderly Poles who were repatriated from Siberia to Poland in the 1920s with the help of the Japanese Red Cross Society.

The three were among some 760 Poles -- mostly family members of political prisoners sent to Siberia and refugees caught in the confusion after the Russian Revolution -- who returned to Poland after receiving medical and other assistance in Japan.
