Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said Thursday it is recalling 674 cars produced between Nov. 12, 2001, and this May 24 due to fears over defective fuel tanks.

The models subject to the recall are the Galant, the Aspire, the Legnum and the Diamante.

In a report to the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry, the automaker said there is a danger of fuel leakage when a tank is full, as the seal packing installed near the fuel pump gauge unit has an inappropriate configuration.

All of the fuel tanks will be refitted with new parts, the company said.

There have been 19 verified instances of the defect but no accidents as of yet, Mitsubishi Motors said.

The company said it found out about the defects from consumer reports.
