OSAKA -- A 70-year-old man foiled a bank heist Wednesday morning by chasing down the robber and turning him over to police.

According to local police, the suspect, Yoshiki Hayashi, 58, entered a UFJ Bank branch in Morikoji, Asahi Ward, at around 10:30 a.m. and held a customer at knifepoint.

He demanded 100 million yen, and ran off after bank employees gave him some 30 million yen in cash, police said.

However, the 70-year-old man, who happened to be walking by the bank just as Hayashi was trying to flee, gave chase for about 50 meters and wrestled him to the ground, they said.

The man, who was not identified, was quoted as telling investigators that while he was frightened, he acted without thinking about what he was doing.
