A fire broke out at around 12:20 p.m. on Wednesday inside the No. 1 terminal building at Narita airport on a moving walkway from the No. 4 satellite, the airport authority said. The fire was extinguished at around 1:40 p.m.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but police believe it may have been caused by overheating of the electrical system or the walkway motor. Passengers were evacuated from the smoke-filled third floor, where the walkway is located, to the second floor.

The Narita City Fire Department, which mobilized five vehicles, including fire engines and ambulances, said there were no reports of injuries and that no explosions were heard before the fire broke out.

Although airport authorities closed the No. 4 satellite, flights were not affected by the incident. The No. 1 terminal is used by 14 airlines, including American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Northwest Airlines, Korean Air and Singapore Airlines.
