FUKUOKA -- Representatives of national media organizations said Tuesday that they would continue to carry out their duties and not be deterred by terrorism.
The declaration was adopted in the annual National Newspaper Convention held in Fukuoka, attended by about 500 newspaper, wire service and broadcast representatives.
In his opening speech, Tsuneo Watanabe, president of the vernacular Yomiuri Shimbun and chairman of the Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association, referred to the terrorist attacks in the United States and said, "The association should not yield to any violence, and should be determined to maintain freedom of speech, discipline and peace in society."
