The alleged rape of a Japanese woman on June 29 by a U.S. serviceman in Okinawa has revived an old debate -- whether crime suspects are treated fairly during the investigative and trial process in Japan.
While the U.S. reluctance to hand over air force Staff Sgt. Timothy Woodland to Japanese authorities focused attention on the treatment of crime suspects in police jails, the 24-year-old airman's temporary home during the trial period -- a detention house -- can be just as gloomy.
