An animation museum designed by Hayao Miyazaki, a popular director of animated films, was opened to the media Monday ahead of its official opening on Oct. 1.

A journalist in Tokyo examines a display at the Ghibli Museum featuring Neko (cat) Bus, an animated character by Hayao Miyazaki.

The Ghibli Museum, located in Inokashira Park, Mitaka, is a joint project between the city of Mitaka and Miyazaki.

Prospective visitors must buy tickets for a specific date and time in advance of their visit. The tickets will be sold at Lawson Inc. stores.

The museum features a permanent exhibition showing filmmaking processes, and a viewing room where visitors can watch original animated short films, they said.

The museum is named after Miyazaki's production company, Studio Ghibli.

The director's hits include "My Neighbor Totoro" and "Princess Mononoke." His latest film is "Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi" ("Spirited Away").

Miyazaki will head the museum.
