Sony Europe B.V. announced plans Wednesday to develop property in central Berlin and build a commercial/residential complex in a joint venture with a German life insurance company.

The building at Leipziger Platz will be designed by the German architectural firm Muller & Reimann, which won an international competition to develop the 4,437-sq.-meter site. The property is adjacent to Potsdamer Platz, where the company's European headquarters is located.

The 12-story building on Leipziger Platz will have 27,500 sq. meters of floor space, featuring shopping outlets and restaurants on the first floor and business offices and condominiums on the upper floors.

Sony Berlin GmbH, Sony Europe's German subsidiary, is developing the property with the German life insurance company Wurttembergische Lebensversicherung AG.

Construction work will begin next year and is targeted for completion by 2005.
