The Japanese Communist Party on Friday adopted a resolution approving the use of the Self-Defense Forces in emergencies, as well as a revision of its platform to abandon the idea of the "vanguard party."

The new policy concerning Japan's de facto military, which the JCP still regards as unconstitutional, was endorsed in a full-fledged revision of the platform in the closing session of the party's 22nd convention.

It is the first revision since the adoption of the JCP charter in 1958.

Participants in the five-day meeting in this hot spa resort also agreed to delete part of the platform's preamble stating the JCP "is the vanguard political party of the Japanese working class."
