The Lower House approved an anticorruption bill Friday that bans politicians from receiving money and goods in return for political favors.

The bill cleared the Lower House with the support of the ruling camp -- the Liberal Democratic Party, New Komeito and the New Conservative Party -- and was immediately sent to the Upper House.

Politicians and their secretaries will face a three-year prison term or a 2.5 million yen fine if they exercise influence over civil servants and accept benefits in the form of assets.
