Toyota Motor Corp. has launched the newly remodeled Celica sports sedan, targeting younger-generation customers in their mid-20s, the nation's top automaker announced Monday.

The new Celica, with a 1.8-liter engine, is priced between 1.68 million yen and 2.26 million yen. Toyota hopes to sell 2,000 units a month in the domestic market.

The automaker hopes to stimulate the domestic market for sports cars, which has been hit by expanding sales of used cars, by selling the remodeled version at a lower price than its predecessor, a Toyota official said.

Celica was originally launched in Japan in 1970, and the latest one is the carmaker's seventh model. Toyota hopes to sell a total of 4,700 units of the new Celica in Asia, Europe and the United States.
