A 23-year-old man who went on a stabbing and clubbing spree in Tokyo's Ikebukuro district Wednesday had left notes in his apartment indicating he wanted to kill people, investigators said.

Hiroshi Zota, a former newspaper deliveryman, was arrested after being subdued by passersby, and investigators said a search of his apartment in Nerima Ward uncovered several memos that revealed a desire to kill people at random.

"Other people are killing fools, so I'm going to do so, too," one of the notes reportedly said. Some memos included references to a female TV newscaster, they added.

Originally from Okayama Prefecture, Zota came to Tokyo in April and began working as a newspaper deliveryman. Coworkers said they sensed no problems, but Zota had not shown up for work since Sept. 4.

Zota has told police that he had been sleeping in capsule hotels since stopping work and up until the time he committed the crime, sources said.
