Five steel posts supporting signs along Tokyo's Metropolitan Expressway system have been removed due to cracks found in inspections following an accident involving a broken pole Tuesday, the Metropolitan Expressway Public Corp. said Wednesday.

The cracks were found during a probe of 327 signposts along the sprawling expressway network that began Tuesday afternoon.

On Tuesday, a sign fell 13 meters from an elevated portion of Metropolitan Expressway No. 3 onto a car on the road below. The passenger was unharmed, but the incident prompted a check of all similar iron poles and signs.
