Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro will make a state visit to Japan from April 13 to 19, Foreign Ministry officials said March 17.
The visit is an effort to help strengthen bilateral relations, the officials said. Scalfaro will have an audience with the Emperor and Empress and hold talks with Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto, they said. The trip to Japan is the first state visit by an Italian president since 1982, they said.
