(Feb. 16)

Translation

Some 630 people succeeded in setting a new Guinness World Record by building 1,585 snowmen in one hour at a Feb. 15 event in the city of Iiyama, Nagano Prefecture. The previous record for most snowmen built in an hour was 1,279, achieved in the United States in 2011. While snow fell, participants made each snowman without using any tools. Snowmen taller than about 90 cm with facial features and ornament arms were counted for the record. The event organizer later received a certificate from officials at Guinness World Records. Ichika Oguchi, aged 8, who joined the event with her family, said: “It was tough because the snow didn’t stick together, but I had fun. I am very happy that we were able to set a record.”
