Celebrating 50 years of French cuisine

In one of the most sophisticated and historic hotels in the capital, the Palace Hotel Tokyo’s popular French restaurant Crown marks its 50th anniversary this year and will offer a celebratory dinner plan from March 12 to 14.

The Crown has served delicate and authentic French cuisine to Tokyo diners since 1964. Since then, it has produced many renowned figures such as Tokusaburo Tanaka, the restaurant’s first executive chef and a pioneer of French cuisine in Japan, as well as Katsumi Asada, the first sommelier in Japan. In December, the restaurant was awarded a star in the 2015 Michelin Guide 2015.

Under the theme of “Tradition and Innovation,” two different dinners will be offered: “Neo Classic” and “Creative.”

Both will be available for ¥21,600 per person and include seven courses with coffee. There will also be a wine pairing option and lunch courses available.

Price includes tax but is subject to a service charge.

Perfect party plan

Throughout January, the Hotel Century Southern Tower in Shinjuku will offer a party plan to help customers get off to a flying start in the New Year.

As the year ends and the new year begins, many people are rushing to finish their work before the holidays as well as fulfill their social and family obligations.

For those who would like to calmly celebrate and start their new year right, the hotel offers a small party plan suitable for any occasion such as a get together with family, close friends or company colleagues who missed the chance to have year end celebrations.

The plan is for groups of six to 12 people and guests will enjoy the fantastic views of Tokyo from a private room on the hotel’s 21st floor. The plan includes seven dishes with a delicious dessert, coffee and unlimited drinks, including a glass of sparkling wine for toasting.

The plan will be available for ¥6,200 per person (¥7,200 for upgraded dishes) for 2½ hours, including tax and service charge.

King cakes to welcome new year

To celebrate the new year, the Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel in the Shibuya area of Tokyo will offer “galettes des rois,” (king cakes) a traditional French confection, at the hotel’s pastry shop, throughout January.

A puff pastry finished with a buttery filling, it is a traditional confection served at Epiphany celebrations in France. Usually, a little ceramic toy called a “feve” is hidden in the cake and it is believed that the person who gets the piece with the toy is going to be lucky for the year.

The hotel’s pastry chef Futoshi Makino prepares simple, but sophisticated and delicious galettes des rois, which have continued to gain popularity since 2009 when the hotel first introduced them.

Small king cakes will be available for ¥1,852 and large ones for ¥2,777. Prices include tax, crown and feve.
