Q1: What was your first encounter with Japan?
I came to Japan for the first time back in 1991. On that occasion, I was on a leisure trip with my wife. Then, I came back in March 2017, when I was appointed ambassador of Italy to Japan.
Q2: Please state your motto in life and why you have chosen it.
“Never surrender determination and focus to achieve success.”
Nothing in life can be achieved without dedication and grit. Obstacles and stumbles are a pivotal part of everyone's personal growth and experience. The key to success, finally, is the hard work and the confidence toward the goals we set ourselves to.
Q3 : Over your career, what achievement are you the proudest of?
My greatest achievement and honor has been the ability to represent Italy and its people within the international community, and to be ambassador of its institutions, culture, values and artistry within several other countries. I am grateful for all this and eventually becoming a medium through which different members of the public can appreciate and enjoy all aspects of Italy.
Q4 : What are your goals during your time in Japan, your current position or in life?
The passion that our Japanese friends bear for Italian culture and products is renowned, as well as the care and the knowledge of “Made in Italy” that is cherished worldwide. Following this vein, my objectives are to enlarge the number of those enjoying the elegance and distinctive charm of Italian brands as a way to spread the Italian lifestyle and to nurture the mutual affection and friendship between Japan and Italy.
Q5 : What wisdom, advice or tips can you give to people living and working in Japan?
Our countries have been united not only by institutional agreements, but above all by a common path throughout history and culture, which laid the foundation of the affinity and friendship that our people share with each other. In a moment when cultural and economic exchanges between our countries are strong and intense, I encourage those living and working here in Japan to embrace the history that pervades its every gesture and to treasure its culture. I believe that our mutual endearment based on modesty and curiosity creates fusions and provides us all with precious and unexpected combinations, enriching us individually and as communities.
