Singer-songwriter Mei Ehara made some interesting discoveries while touring North America as the opening act for U.S. artist Faye Webster earlier this year. One came at the Texas offices of anime streaming service Crunchyroll.

“Faye is a big anime fan,” says Ehara, 34. “They were showing us around the office, where they do subtitles and the mixing room. They’d have an anime made in Japan with background music, then they would show us the mixed version from the U.S. It made the Japanese one look so two-dimensional because the U.S. one had so much depth. It really showed the difference of where one placed sounds.”

That was just one of many experiences on the road with Webster over the past year that shaped “All About McGuffin,” Ehara’s third full-length album, scheduled for release Sept. 12. It arrives as Ehara — who stylizes her name in all lowercase — prepares for her first band-backed jaunt to San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Chicago, following a solo spot opening for South Korean group Se So Neon.
