Japanese inter-media artist Aki Inomata has won international acclaim for her "inter-species" works that incorporate living creatures into social commentary art.
This solo exhibition includes Inomata's most recent work and takes its title from American science historian Donna Haraway's "The Companion Species," a manifesto on human-animal relationships. Inspired by Haraway, much of Inomata's work explores non-human perspectives, the flow of time, environments and the Earth's ecosystems.
Exhibits include Inomata's signature project "Why Not Hand Over a 'Shelter' to Hermit Crabs?" (2014-2015), for which she 3D printed new "shells" for hermit crabs in the shape of building landmarks; "ThinkEvolution#1: Kiku-ishi (Ammonite)," inspired by octopuses and ammonites; and her observational piece involving clams affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami.
