Man invented the airplane so he could fly, but in the modern world the airplane experience has less to do with flying than slowly suffocating with headphones on while watching the latest movies. Said Leonardo da Vinci: "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward for there you have been and there you will long to return." Sorry Leo, not lately.

In "Bird People," this is especially true for Gary (Josh Charles), who seems to spend most of his waking hours flying from one airport to another, and moving from conference room to conference room — with a phone in one hand, earphones plugged in and a suitcase filled with folders and digital devices. His schedule is packed to the gills with appointments in faraway places and he has just a day or two in-between.

"How was your flight?" asks Gary's wife over the phone and with the fleeting look on his face you can tell he is thinking "That was flying?"
