Tchaikovsky medalists tour Japan

Winning instrumentalists in the 2007 International Tchaikovsky Competition will tour Japan from Jan. 23-30. The gala concert brings together the three gold medalists and two silver medalists from last June’s 13th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, including Japanese violinist Mayuko Kamio.

Named after the romantic Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the competition has been one of the world’s most prestigious classical music competitions since its inception in 1958. On this Japan tour, the top performers from each of the competition’s four categories — piano, violin, cello and voice — will perform concertos and arias.

The predominantly Tchaikovsky program is headed by 21-year-old violinist Mayuko Kamio from Osaka, who will play the popular violin concerto in D major op. 35. She will be joined by 22-year-old Russian pianist Miroslav Kultyshev, who will perform Tchaikovsky’s piano concerto No.1 in B flat minor op. 23, and 24-year-old Russian cellist Sergey Antonov will perform Tchaikovsky’s “Variations for Cello and Orchestra on a Rococo Theme” op. 33. The winners of the voice category, Ukrainian bass Alexander Tsymbalyuk and Russian mezzo-soprano Olesya Petrova, will be supported as soloists by the Tchaikovsky Foundation Russian Symphony Orchestra.

The 13th Tchaikovsky International Competition Gala Concert Japan Tour will be held at The Symphony Hall, Osaka (Jan. 20, 3 p.m., [06] 6453-6000); Koriyama City Cultural Center, Fukushima (Jan. 22, 6.30 p.m., [024] 933-5856); Tochigi Sogo Bunka Center, Tochigi (Jan. 23, 6.30 p.m., [028] 643-1010); Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall, Yokohama (Jan. 24, 7 p.m., [045] 682-2000); Kobe International House, Kobe (Jan. 27, 2 p.m., [078] 231-8162); Suntory Hall, Tokyo (Jan. 28, 7 p.m., [03] 3409-3345); Bunkamura Orchard Hall, Tokyo (Jan. 29, 7 p.m., [03] 3409-3345); and Aichi Prefectural Art Theater, Nagoya (Jan. 30, 6.45 p.m., [052] 957-3333).
