This pretty young cat was rescued from the streets over a year ago. The kind person who found her brought her to ARK, where she was named Jimena. With a name that means “listener,” Jimena is still listening attentively and watching warily — a hard-to-break habit from her former life.

She was extremely cautious when she first arrived at ARK, always hiding, hissing and growling at people. Though she still scurries away sometimes, she has warmed up to humans enough to let them visit her and her roommate in their loft. At first, she stands guard by the door. But if it’s someone she knows, she’ll rub up against their legs or the wall.

Jimena enjoys being with other cats and would do best in a home with a fellow feline to keep her company.

Sweet Jimena is rather timid and scared by sudden noises. Food can lure her out, and she’ll surely grow more comfortable and confident with time. She loves being with another cat, so we’re hoping she and her roommate can be adopted together. Or perhaps there’s a home for her with a feline resident that’s looking for a companion.

If you are interested in adopting, email ARK at [email protected] or call 050-1557-2763 (English or Japanese) Monday to Saturday (bilingual) for more information. Animal Refuge Kansai (with offices in Kansai and Tokyo) is an NPO founded by U.K. native Elizabeth Oliver. It is dedicated to rescuing and rehoming abandoned animals. All animals are vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. Prospective owners are required to undergo a screening process. Web: www.arkbark.net
