Piracy of intellectual property rampant in Indonesia
JAKARTA -- Piracy of intellectual property rights is found all over Southeast Asia. In most countries the problem is recognized and authorities are trying to deal with it.

Let them breathe water: U.S. blocks sustainable development talks
BALI -- Already from the beginning there was an air of defeatism at the preparatory meeting in Bali for the World Summit on Sustainable Development. It was certainly not the ambience: The resort-style lodging for the 6,000 delegates could hardly have been a reason for complaint. But after two weeks of negotiations, the final outcome Friday lacked clear targets and timetables.

Rude awakening for East Timor
JAKARTA -- The world's youngest democracy will have to stand on its own feet from Sunday. On this day East Timor will become the first newly independent nation of the 21st century. After more than 400 years of colonial rule by Portugal, 25 years of Indonesian occupation and over two years under U.N. administration, the wish of its people is being fulfilled. This is cause for celebration, but not an occasion to ignore some real worries.

'Tommy' Suharto trial also tests judiciary
JAKARTA -- The youngest son of former Indonesian President Suharto went to trial for murder Wednesday. The case is probably the most important test yet of the credibility of Indonesia's legal system. Hutomo Mandala Putra, better known as Tommy, stands accused of masterminding the murder of a Supreme Court justice. If found guilty the notorious playboy could be sentenced to death.

Wary foreign investors shunning Indonesia
JAKARTA -- Foreign investment in Indonesia has been locked in a downward spiral. Despite optimism at the appointment of the current government, the country has barely been able to attract capital from outside. The terror attack against the United Stated on Sept. 11 only partly explains the negative sentiment.
