A zebra burst out of a truck parked at a service area along the Kyushu Expressway early Tuesday en route to a zoo in Kumamoto Prefecture, highway police said.
The mare, weighing some 200 kg, was being moved from Tennoji Zoo in Osaka to a municipal zoo in Kumamoto. The driver had pulled into the Kita-Kumamoto service area to rest and make adjustments to the shipping schedule, the highway police of the Kumamoto Prefectural Police said.
The zebra knocked down the wooden gate on the truck’s loading platform and broke loose around 12:55 a.m. before galloping around the parking lot.
The truck driver cornered the zebra in a restroom and kept it there until Kumamoto zoo veterinarians arrived and tranquilized it.
