U.K. liberties versus security
LONDON — The director general of the British Security Services (MI5) has been telling the world that there are at least 2,000 people inside Britain who are involved in terrorism-related activities, and there may be many more. Or to put it crudely, there are at least 2,000 individuals bent on killing innocent Britons as they go about their daily business.

Don't toy around with Sino-U.S. relations
LOS ANGELES — An effective foreign policy requires proportionate thinking. Hysteria and demagoguery can win a few elections, but they can lose wars and economic battles of enormous consequence. In the United States, foreign policy is particularly complex: Even if the president and the executive branch get things right, the effort will be eviscerated if overly ambitious politicians in the legislative branch make a brutal hash of coherent policy.

Reagan liked a number of people
Regarding the May 24 article "Reagan thought Nakasone 'best' Japan leader": It might be noted that in the early 1980s, Reagan also admired Saddam Hussein (fighting the Iranians) and even Panama's little drug-dealing dictator Manuel Noriega, who is now sitting quietly in a Florida prison cell after being arrested and convicted on related criminal charges.

Blogger editorial disappoints
I was excited to see an editorial about the ascendancy of blogging in Japan . . . until I actually read all of it ("Japan as number-one blogger," April 22). While it could have been an engaging celebration of this boom in people's media, it ended up being a lame and quite bizarre attempt to downplay the importance of blogs.
