No shortcut to the master level
A thank you to Amy Chavez for her Dec. 1 column, "The best-ever tips on learning Japanese." I am pleased that Chavez knows how to write the truth with heart. Her article is the stake in the heart of those that whine about Japanese being difficult to learn.

Just deserts of the Ichihashi flick
Regarding the Nov. 25 article "(Tatsuya) Ichihashi book on life on lam to be made into flick": An honorable thing to do would be to have the proceeds from the film contributed toward a memorial to the young woman whose life he took.

'Eastern spirit' could use humility
I am sure that Hideo Kaito knows what he is talking about in his Aug. 9 letter ("Committed leader or bad clown?"), but I have no idea. Perhaps he is trying to imagine what it's like being on the victorious side of an Asian nation against the United States or the West. To me, he is just showing the true, two-faced nature of the meaning of friendship in Japanese politics.

Mr. Moriya's testimony
Testifying as a sworn witness in the Diet, former Vice Defense Minister Takemasa Moriya admitted that an extraordinarily close relationship existed between him and a former executive of defense equipment trader Yamada Corp. But he denied any wrongdoing that may bring a criminal charge against him. Mr. Moriya managed to tide over questions in the Lower House special committee on antiterrorism affairs. But unless the Defense Ministry cleans house, it will not only lose people's trust but also harm the morale of rank-and-file members of the Self-Defense Forces.
