Once a drug user in Japan, always an outcast
Since being arrested for possession of stimulant drugs on June 2, it is assumed that 30-year-old actor Ryo Hashizume's career is over. As Mark Schilling wrote in the June 15 Japan Times, Hashizume's latest film, in which he played a supporting role, was pulled from theaters. It reopened June 17, but with Hashizume's scenes deleted. For all intents and purposes, he had become a nonperson in show business.

'Captain America': Civil War: Marvel shows Superman how it's done
Have we reached peak superhero yet? After spending the winter months watching "Jessica Jones" and "Daredevil" on Netflix, viewers can now subject themselves to a barrage of comic-book spectacle at their local multiplex. Following last month's clattering, messy "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" comes "Captain America: Civil War," an even more elaborately conceived clash between costumed ubermenschen.

'Avengers: Age of Ultron' didn't need a director
How many superheroes does it take to make a movie? At this point, Marvel Studio's cinematic empire is getting so overpopulated that you'd need a spreadsheet to keep track of who everyone is. There are over a dozen comic-book characters vying for attention in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," — some who have their own standalone films and TV series to promote — and the movie barely knows what to do with them all.

Chef: 'battle cry of an artist who dreams of being his own master'
Heads up to "Iron Man" fans, "Chef" is director Jon Favreau's fabulous stress-vanquishing vehicle after all his superhero ventures, and it lets off more steam than all the potholes in New York City. There is not one superhero sighting here. Although "Iron Man" himself, Robert Downey Jr., makes an appearance, he's more interested in finding a good restaurant than kicking ass.

The Judge: 'works better if you're a well-to-do, over-40 male'
There is a point in a woman's life — specifically, mine — when surprises in movies and in dates are just not all that welcome anymore. Which is why "The Judge" is a vehicle to like — very, very much. Robert Downey Jr. faces off with Robert Duvall in a patriarchal, angst-ridden mystery thriller set in small-town Indiana. There are rewards to be reaped from this story that takes you exactly where you think you're going, and arrives at the moment you think you'll get there. So what if there are no detours — much less, speed bumps — along the way? Granted there are no surprises, but it's pretty high on the comfort factor.
