Tsunami-hit Japanese town completes divisive demolition of former municipal office
A town in Iwate Prefecture on Wednesday completed the demolition of its former municipal office building — where its mayor and 27 other workers were killed in the tsunami triggered by the devastating Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 — even though some people had sought to have it preserved as a memorial.

Work began Saturday to tear down a former town hall building in Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture, where dozens of people died after it was hit by a tsunami in 2011, despite calls by some local residents to preserve it as a memorial.

Fighting to recover from the ocean's wrath
On April 11, Wataru Takeshita, the minister for reconstruction of the areas most seriously affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, met in Kamaishi with local government representatives to discuss the budget for Iwate Prefecture. After the meeting, the mayor of Kamaishi spoke to the press and said Takeshita told them the central government would continue paying for reconstruction work through next year, but after that he expected the prefecture and municipalities to cover part of the burden themselves.

Missing donation box recovered in Otsuchi, minus money
Officials in the tsunami-hit town of Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture, which lost 40 town officials including the mayor in the March 2011 tsunami, said a donation box believed to have been stolen in mid-August had been found at a local beach and was returned to the town on Wednesday.
