Label of love With pretty much anything now just a quick printout away, is there really still a place in the office or at home for the humble label writer? Looking at the Tepra Pro label writer from King Jim — a company mostly known for its colorful binders and filing systems — it becomes apparent that there's something comforting about the old-school charms of a device that devotes all of its efforts to that one task. But the Tepra Pro is indeed a tool of the modern age, with the aesthetically pleasing cube opening up to reveal an LCD screen and tiny keyboard — used to write your message — using an amazing array of colored labels to print on. The Tepra Pro series includes two models: the self-contained SR600 label writer (available in white or red) at ¥24,000, and the SR3700P label printer, which plugs into your Windows or Mac computer via a USB cable, for ¥21,000.

A prototype in your livingroom
When architect Keiji Ashizawa decided to move his Tokyo studio into a new space last year, he wanted to do something with it before settling in. So he arranged an exhibition last December in which a group of Tokyo-based designers presented all manner of prototypes for commercial products such as the 5 Stacking Chair (pictured right).

Great design ideas do not necessarily need to cost an arm and a leg -- even though some manufacturers would like you to think so. With that in mind, this month's picks are a grab bag of affordable products, all under 10,000 yen (the small version of the Oblong clock excepted). Between the crafty and the user-friendly
Receptacle for the respectable It wouldn't seem that much could be done to improve on the functionality of the lowly water dispenser -- all you need is a receptacle and a tap. Enter Kai House with the Adhoc product from their Kitchen Design Movement collection. It features both a paired-down design -- it's almost nothing but a stand -- and a stark sense of modernism that makes it an attractive addition to the kitchen. The advantage to owning an Adhoc is that it can be used with any PET bottle, so you're not limited to using a specialized container to supply the water. The only thing you'll really need to consider is whether you'll want to load your bottle as is or take the time to remove labels and go for that clear "au naturel" look. The Adhoc water dispenser sells for 8,000 yen and is available in either stainless steel or blue.
