Less meant more to Shunso Hishida
It's no secret that the Japanese art world was going through major changes at the end of the 19th century. On the one hand, there was a flood of Western art styles, called yōga, offering exciting new possibilities, while, on the other, there was a reaction called nihonga, which sought to revitalize indigenous styles so that they could compete or at least hold their own.

'Kyoto: Splendors of the Ancient Capital'
After five years of construction, the Kyoto National Museum is ready to open a new wing, the Heisei Chishinkan, on Sept. 13 2014. To celebrate, the museum is bringing together 400 historical works related to Kyoto, including around 50 National Treasures and 110 Important Cultural Properties.

Yoshio Taniguchi: thriving in the shadow of greatness
Architect Yoshio Taniguchi generally doesn't like having his photograph taken for use in the media. In a way, it's a logical extension of his approach to his work, which could be described as architecture by subtraction. Having painstakingly removed everything extraneous from a design, and having overseen the creation of a building whose every element has been interrogated and found to be absolutely essential, why would he then allow it to be tainted through association with a face, a personality, an architect brand?

Hashimoto's rings shine with history
The Hashimoto Collection of rings is the largest number of works to be donated to the National Museum of Western Art since it was originally established to house the Matsutaka Collection of artworks in 1959. Received in 2012, this vast collection of hundreds of rings from all ages and nations is also being shown to the public for the first time.

The back story to Taiwan's treasures
The artworks and objects on display at the Tokyo National Museum's latest show, "Treasured Masterpieces from the National Palace Museum, Taipei," have had something of checkered history. A large part of this was due to the efforts of the Japanese Imperial Army to get their hands on the collection, which moved from Beijing to several other cities, as it advanced following the invasion of China in 1937.

Daigoji Temple celebrates its collection
World Heritage Site, Daigoji Temple, was founded on the summit of Mount Kasatori in southeastern Kyoto when the monk Rigen Daishi Shobo (832-909) is said to have discovered a spring from which flowed the "ultimate taste, representing the highest state of Buddhist wisdom." From 876, he had produced statues of Juntei and Nyoirin — two forms of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvaran— and by the 10th century, Daigoji had come under Imperial patronage along with a lower precinct at the mountain's base.

Visit Japan's prehistoric past
It's hard to imagine, but millions of years ago elephants roamed Japan. Although they died out long before civilization, Tokyo's National Museum of Nature and Science can help us imagine these majestic creatures and other prehistoric mammals through a display of Japan-specific fossils. The "Ancient Mammals Exhibition" showcases 170 rare specimens collated from various Japanese museums, and it is the first large-scale exhibition to focus on extinct mammals that once inhabited Japan.

'The Rings from the Hashimoto Collection of the National Museum of Western Art'
To commemorate Kanshi Hashimoto's 2012 donation of 870 pieces of jewelry from the Hashimoto Collection, The National Museum of Western Art is showcasing around 300 of the 760 rings in the collection. These rings — many encrusted with diamonds and other gems — represent various periods of history, the oldest dating back 4,000 years. This is the first time they are being shown to the public.

'Guess What? Hardcore Contemporary Art's Truly a World Treasure'
Contemporary artworks are rarely described as "world treasures," but here The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo has come up with its own definition of the phrase. These are works that are literally "treasures" in terms of their high market value, but also because of their ability to convey universal messages in forms that will withstand the tests of time. Of the 75 works on display, many have been controversial and all are by major artists, such as Francis Bacon, Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol and Hiroshi Sugimoto.
