'Irrational Man': The muddled world of Woody Allen
In the manner of Captain Renault in "Casablanca," I was shocked — shocked! — to find so much dialogue in a modern-day movie. But then "Irrational Man" is a Woody Allen venture and, apparently, Allen is unaware, or has chosen to ignore, that couples today do not talk incessantly with each other the way his characters have been doing for decades.

Thomas Pynchon meets The Dude in 'Inherent Vice'
"Inherent vice," a term used in marine insurance law, means anything you can't avoid: chocolate will melt, glass will shatter and fruit will spoil. For "Inherent Vice" the movie, the thing that can't be avoided is a comparison to "The Big Lebowski."

'Her'
The fact that the promotional poster for "Her" features the lone, male, mustachioed face of Joaquin Phoenix tells you most of what you need to know about this gentlyhorrific tale of the nearfuture. This is a world that very much resembles our own, but taken a little further, in terms of dealing with human-relationship issues. People still date, get married and share intimacy, but it's also possible to outsource much of everything that puts a strain on the nerves — includingmessy emotions such as genuine love or the crushing feeling of rejection.
