Six months on, U.K. schools are losing the Olympic legacy
Near the entrance of York High School in northern England, painted in large letters, are the words of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. "To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield." It is not a bad motto, particularly for a school that prides itself on its sporting prowess. Along all the corridors and outside each of the classrooms are images of sportsmen and women, many of them famous Olympians. At the start of every lesson, whether it be mathematics or PE, the state school's 800 pupils are set three targets; gold, silver and bronze. "We really try to incorporate the ethos of the Olympics into every aspect of school life," says the head teacher, David Ellis.

'Jiro Dreams of Sushi'
To describe "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" as a foodie film is akin to picking an English rose and calling it a flower. This documentary by New York-based David Gelb is at once a celebration of one of the world's most popular and coveted meals, and a firsthand observation of Japan's most famous sushi chef at work. What unfolds here is less a story than immersion in a painting hung in a exclusive gallery; you find yourself lost in the details of the counter at Sukiyabashi Jiro, and catching your breath at the outrageous beauty of chef Jiro Ono's omakase (chef's choice) plate.

What became of the Meiji spirit?
LONDON — The number of Japanese studying at top universities abroad has been declining while the number of outstanding Chinese students has been increasing. Numbers are not everything, but it is disturbing to see reports that Japanese students are less willing than Chinese to participate actively in discussions and are less articulate in English.
