Is nicotine addiction bad for your health?
Since he ditched Marlboro Lights five years ago, Daniel's fix is fruit-flavored nicotine gum that comes in neat, pop-out strips. He gets through 12 to 15 pieces a day and says he has "packets of the stuff" stashed all over. But he doesn't see himself as a nicotine addict.

Former drug addict relieved to be alive
You won't find an air conditioner in any inmate wings at Fuchu Prison, no matter how hot it is outside. And on this sweltering, cloudless day in August, it is certainly hot. Two members from Drug Addiction Rehabilitation Center (DARC) are preparing to hold a session with a group of repeat drug offenders in a room that is kept cool with only a fan. Vibrant sunlight streams through the lace curtains, giving the scene a somewhat surreal backdrop. Every once and a while, a gust of wind wafts through the room, making the temperature just bearable despite the suffocating heat.

Cyber-kids get a break during Bon holidays
You didn't need prophetic powers, back in the 1980s when the personal computer was starting to show its potential, to foresee something like Internet addiction. It should have been obvious. It was, to science-fiction writer William Gibson. Reminiscing to Time magazine in 1995, he recalled his shock, as he walked by a video-game arcade sometime in the late '80s, at how absorbed the players were in their glowing screens. "I could see in the physical intensity of their postures how rapt the kids were," he said. "These kids clearly believed in the space the games projected. They develop a belief that there's some kind of actual space behind the screen."
