Headlines over the first three days of the ongoing Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament have been dominated by veteran Hokutofuji.
The 31-year-old has bounced back in stunning fashion from a heartbreaking championship playoff loss two months ago in Nagoya.
Despite going into the September meet with a 34% career win rate overall against Takakeisho, Hoshoryu and Kirishima, Hokutofuji opened the tournament with consecutive victories over sumo’s three current ozeki.
