The Jan. 15 editorial, "Wars over whaling," states "If the current hunting is really being done, as stated, for scientific purposes, the results should be opened to public and professional scrutiny, as is done with all serious scientific research." These results are available at http://www.icrwhale.org/DocumentList.html

Further on, the editorial states: "They have also, in the past, rammed whaling boats and boarded the whalers in open seas. Japanese whaling ships have replied in kind."

The last sentence is false. To date, the whalers have never rammed a boat operated by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Any instance of such a claim is either one in which a Sea Shepherd vessel rammed the whalers or one in which Sea Shepherd recklessness caused a collision.

The opinions expressed in this letter to the editor are the writer's own and do not necessarily reflect the policies of The Japan Times.
