I am a fan of the United States who enjoyed every moment of the World Cup and the Americans' ascension through the tournament. I cheered for the U.S. in the final as well. Sad as it is to see this group of young women lose — as they were on the edge of the championship — I was thoroughly warmed by the wonderful performance of the Japanese team.

The American players, like the German team earlier and maybe even the Swedes, were bigger, stronger and more highly ranked. But there's more to this game than bare numbers.

Congratulations to the Japanese World Cup team. Monday produced one of the greatest sports moments I have ever witnessed. Japan, as a nation, has seen tragedy many times and rebuilt from difficult situations. This team symbolizes the very best of what the rest of the world has seen in your nation.

Next time, I will again be rooting for Abby Wambach, Hope Solo and the girls in red, white and blue. But only a hardened heart could not be warmed by the result. Just amazing.
