Regarding the Oct. 18 editorial, "Winning in Afghanistan": Afghanistan is larger in size than France and consists of rough mountainous terrain. It has no infrastructure worthy of the name and the population is hostile toward "unbelievers." To pacify a land like that will require a force of at least a million plus communications equipment, helicopters, etc. If all this is provided, pacification is certainly possible, even within a year. If this is, for whatever reason, not possible, then NATO should get out as soon as possible!
