Liberal Democratic Party President Sanae Takaichi is set to be elected prime minister in parliament on Tuesday afternoon, making history as Japan’s first female leader.
Monday’s coalition agreement between the LDP and the Japan Innovation Party (JIP) has made it all but certain that Takaichi has garnered enough support to take the country’s helm.
While the two parties are just short of an absolute majority in the Lower House, if the coalition can clinch the backing of some independent lawmakers in the chamber, Takaichi might avoid a runoff and be elected in the first round of voting.
