The Liberal Democratic Party and Japan Innovation Party (JIP) agreed to form a coalition Monday, making it almost certain that LDP President Sanae Takaichi, who has been struggling to find a new ally, will become Japan’s first female prime minister Tuesday.
Leaders of the two party — Takaichi and Osaka Gov. Hirofumi Yoshimura — are expected to meet Monday evening to formally sign a coalition agreement.
With the deal, lawmakers of the JIP — which is also known as Nippon Ishin no Kai — are expected to vote for Takaichi in Tuesday’s parliamentary vote for prime minister. The JIP has 35 members in the Lower House and 19 in the Upper House.
