Of all the political parties keeping an eye on Saturday’s Liberal Democratic Party presidential election, none is more concerned than Komeito.

The result means the junior coalition partner will have to adjust to a new LDP, including one whose values might be different from its own, a prospect that has Komeito leader Tetsuo Saito concerned.

Just after Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced his resignation on Sept. 7, Saito said, in a surprise move, that Komeito cannot form a coalition government with any party that doesn’t align itself with its moderate conservative policies.
