Chinese espionage, disinformation and psychological warfare activities in the Philippines continue at a high pace, a top security official in the Southeast Asian country has warned, prompting both lawmakers and security agencies to push for an update of the nation's decades-old anti-espionage laws.
The Chinese “have been operating in the Philippines for some time and we are now realizing the extent of their operations,” Philippine National Security Council (NSC) Assistant Director-General Cornelio Valencia told The Japan Times.
Valencia said that the rise in these kinds of Chinese moves in the country, termed “malign influence activities,” has been “almost on par with Beijing’s ship deployments and movements in the West Philippine Sea.”
