Authorities on Friday rearrested a 49-year-old man who allegedly threw Molotov cocktails at the Liberal Democratic Party headquarters in Tokyo last month.
Atsunobu Usuda — whose occupation is unknown — was reportedly carrying nearly 200 liters of gasoline in his vehicle during the alleged attacks on the ruling party headquarters and also the Prime Minister’s Office, investigative sources revealed on Thursday.
Metropolitan police allege that Usuda threw Molotov cocktails at the LDP headquarters and have rearrested him on charges of violating the law against the possession of incendiary devices, as well as attempted murder.
Since his initial arrest on charges of obstructing official duties, Usuda has remained silent. Investigators are analyzing confiscated computers to uncover how he obtained or manufactured the Molotov cocktails, as well as to determine his motives.
According to sources, on the morning of Oct. 19, Usuda allegedly drove a small vehicle to the front of the LDP headquarters in Tokyo’s Nagatacho district, where he threw about five Molotov cocktails at riot police stationed there.
Before launching the attack, he reportedly used a high-pressure washer to spray an unknown liquid at the riot police and deployed tear gas. Three officers suffered throat irritation as a result.
Following this, Usuda drove approximately 650 meters to the Prime Minister’s Office, where he rammed his vehicle into barriers meant to prevent unauthorized entry. He then threw smoke grenades at police officers and tossed Molotov cocktails at his own car, apparently in an attempt to ignite gasoline stored inside.
However, he surrendered after officers drew their guns, leading to his arrest at the scene.
Authorities discovered that the car was loaded with 16 jerry cans filled with nearly 200 liters of gasoline. Molotov cocktails found in the vehicle were similar to those used in the earlier attack.
During both attacks, Usuda was reportedly wearing a gas mask and protective gear.
