The Tokyo District Court on Tuesday sentenced a former law school student to 4½ years in prison for cutting off the penis of a lawyer whom the defendant suspected had forced his wife to have sexual relations.

Ikki Kotsugai, 25, charged with causing injury and violation of the Firearm and Sword Control Law, "inflicted irreparable harm" on the 43-year-old lawyer, Judge Kazunori Karei said.

According to the ruling, Kotsugai punched the lawyer several times and cut off his penis with a pair of scissors he had brought with him to the lawyer's office in Minato Ward, Tokyo, last Aug. 13.

"The victim continues to suffer physical and psychological pain day after day," the judge said.

During the trial, Kotsugai said he was told by his wife that she had had sexual relations with the lawyer, whom she was working for.

"I could not control my anger as I thought she was forced to have sex with him," Kotsugai said.

But the court found that there was no reason to believe that the lawyer forced her to have sex with him.

Prosecutors had demanded a six-year sentence for Kotsugai.
